Radio Cumbria commentator John Walsh had to come to the defence of Town mascot Spike at the Huntington Stadium, York, on Sunday.

One of the press corps from York asked him why a wolf had a point coming out of his head! "Because that wolf happens to be a unicorn," was the response, which seemed to satisfy the York hacks.

Walsh had come face to face with Spike a few days earlier at a presentation in the Tesco store at Workington when he was covering a news event. Victoria Infants School in Workington has won 1,000 computer vouchers thanks to the artistic skills of seven-year-old Zoe Clarke.

Zoe was judged to have produced the best entry in a special Easter competition organised by the Tesco store. Francis Jackson, customer services manager at the store, made the presentation and said: "The children were invited to enter pictures depicting months or seasons of the year and Zoe was selected as the winner from over 150 entries. "It's all part of the national scheme to provide computers for school and we decided to do our bit by running a painting competition."

Zoe, who won with a picture of Spring, was at the store to collect 1,000 vouchers for Victoria Infants and also to receive a special Easter egg. And it was a good school holiday for pupils of Victoria Infants as six-year-old Rachelle Brannie also went along to receive her giant chocolate Easter bunny which she had won in a special treasure hunt round the Tesco store.

Spike, the by-now familiar Workington Town mascot, made the presentation to Rachelle and there were certainly no questions from the youngsters about wolves having points on their heads! Pictured are Francis Jackson, Zoe, Rachelle and Spike.
