Town to offer retail therapy

Town shop is only a few weeks away from opening in Workington's Fisher Street. The property is having some work done over the next couple of weeks and will be ready for opening on 17th March the day before the Town's home clash with Hunslet Hawks.

We will open with the new range of club mechandise, Fleeces, Scarfs, Badges, Caps, Drill Tops, Sweatshirts, Polo Shirts, Tracksuits and replica shirts on sale and it will very quickly become a Rugby Shop as a whole. We are looking to move into Body armour, Kicking cups, Arm pads, Gum shields, also some of the strips from the Austraian super league, union super 12's strips and much much more.

Workington is a big rugby area not only league but union as well, we can sell quality merchandise at very reasonable prices. The club believes that by keeping the prices down we will encourage rugby league in general through out Workington and Cumbria, which in turn will help us with improved support and help us develop the game as a whole.

The opening will be a great day with players being present for autographs all day and Gary will also be down to talk to the fans about the club and the game, we are also hoping to have some great opening day offers available for the fans.

The shop premises will also provide some much wanted office space for the club because since the office block at Derwent Park had to be demolised the club have struggled with the lack of space and hopefully the shop will resolve this issue.Town Shop

This shop is another great new chapter in the club's regeneration and we hope it will be well received by the fans. We will be running a visitors/message book where guests and customers will be able to sign in and leave their name and address and contact numbers. They can also leave a message for the club or an individual similar to the Internet site message board. We will then be running competitions, special offer draws and as any new merchandise becomes available we will be able to contact everyone and invite them in to view it, we hope to build up a data base of our supporters so we know what they like and want.

The club is really moving forward and this is an excellent opportunity for us to offer a real service to the supporters old and new, we are also looking to set up a PC in the shop were our fans can visit our web site and enjoy a really friendly atmosphere while surfing the net and enjoying a tea or coffee with friends.

Fans will also be able to go into the shop and vote on the poll currently under way for next years strip. The voting is going well on the site and the favourite so far is the plain White strip with the blue V (65.79% of the votes). The Black strip currently has 23.68% of the votes and Neither has 10.34% of the votes.

John Allen ready to agree terms

John Allen is ready to commit himself to Town for the rest of the season.

John had been hampered by injury early in the season, had signed for Town on a conditional contract. Over the past few weeks he has made a few appearances for the Alliance team and was named in the first team squad for the match at Barrow last Sunday where he made an impact off the bench.

Gary Murdock said "one or two things were not going right early on and he came it at centre and steadied things up."

"He's still on a conditional contract, but it's just a case of getting down to talking about a contract as he's happy here and wants to play."

"He's a nice addition at this time of year, especially after losing Leigh Smith to suspension."

"He looks very sharp, seems to have lost a bit of weight and made a couple of good breaks on Sunday."

Horner quits Town

The rumours concerning Mickey Horner and the club were today confirmed in Tuesday's (27th Feb) News and Star. The club say that Mickey has not made himself available for selection or attended training since he was recently dropped for the Chorley match.

Gary believes that any travelling player has to be performing consistently to warrant his place in the side at the expense of the youngsters who are knocking at the door for a first team place.

Gary stressed that decision to leave has been taken by Mickey and not the club. He also added that the board have not released him and he is still under contract with the club.

Workington's Teenage Star Wins Award

Workington Town's teenage hooker Carl Sice has won the Rugby League World NFP Player of the Month award for February.

The 19 year old hooker has rapidly developed into one of the Northern Ford Premiership's outstanding young stars this season after graduating through Town's Academy set-up.

The former Kells amateur is joined in the Team of the Month by teammates Graeme Lewthwaite and Matt Sturm, as Town recovered from a 70-0 thrashing at Leigh to record impressive away wins at Swinton and Barrow. The upturn in form has established Town as genuine top-eight contenders.

The award is presented by Rugby League World magazine.
