Town to complain after cancellation of Leigh match
According to last night's News and Star, Town are alleged to be considering lodging a complaint with the Rugby League over the cancellation of Sunday's match.
The Town team were already travelling when they received confirmation that the match had been cancelled.
According to messages posted on this site's message board, BBC Teletext were supposed to have confirmed that the match was off at 08:00. However, site manager Mike McCallig said today: "I checked all teletext services on all channels, including Sky, as well as checking every website (including both Leigh sites) that would have information concerning this match between 07:00 and 09:15 and none even mentioned a pitch inspection let alone that the match was off."
"I travel to away matches with the Town supporters club, and Pauline Burton, the Town supporters club chairperson contacted the club and was informed that a pitch inspection was to take place."
"Pauline contacted Leigh Rugby League club directly at 09:00 and the person who answered the telephone confirmed that a pitch inspection was due to take place at 09:30. They also informed Pauline that there had been a very heavy snowfall in the Leigh area overnight and that the police had expressed safety concerns over the terracing which was covered in snow. This person was informed that the Town supporters club were due to set off at 09:30, their reply to this was that in their opinion the match would not be played due to the safety concerns that had been raised and that fans should not travel."
"Pauline then had to cancel the bus (which the supporters club may still have to pay for) and contact all the supporters that would be waiting that the match was off."
"The Club were contacted by Leigh at 10:10 and told that the match had been cancelled. The Town bus had already left at 09:30"
