On Sunday after the Castleford Lock Lane game several of the players took part in an event to raise funds for this seasons club charity the Cumbria Cerebral Palsy Society.
These players had been sponsored to get their heads shaved. Town players, officials and supporters had been raising sponsorship for this event for several weeks and the original date of January 14th had to be rearranged after the Chorley match was cancelled due to a frozen pitch.
The players involved were Jamie Beaumont, Carl Sice, Kevin Hetherington, Graeme Lewthwaite, Lee Smith, Mathew Tunstall and Craig Barker. These are all 1st team players that very kindly volunteered for the event some time ago.
The event was held in the Derwent Lounge and club chairman Geoff Tubman made the mistake of getting on the stage to host the event. He was to pay a high price for taking on this role. Geoff paid with his hair.
Jamie Beaumont started the event with one of the Castleford Lock Lane supporters called Joe Johnson, who had been challenged by his friends to sacrifice his hair to raise funds for the event. They very kindly dipped into their pockets and boosted the collection.
It was hoped that this event would raise about £1000. The final total is expected to be in the region of £1500 after the sponsorship was boosted by a collection in the Derwent Lounge which raised over £250 during the head shave, with £110 of that coming from donations for Geoff Tubman to get his head shaved.
Geoff got back on the stage and completed the challenge. Geoff looked very happy and gave a running commentary, but kept repeating over and over again "Tom Mitchell never had to do this, Kevin Gorge never done this". Taj an associate director at the club also got sponsored to face the cutters, and ended up losing his beard as well.
The club would like to thank Kellee, Julie and Anne from Hair Workshop of 24 Wilson Street, Workington, (01900 67153) who completed the head shave free of charge and also donated £10 to help get Geoff's head shaved.
All the players and officials of the club are trying hard to raise awareness and funds for the Cumbria Cerebral Palsy Society. They will be completing 8 events through the year the head shave being the 1st. Also Town supporter Alan Nixon will be running the London Marathon to help raise funds for the charity.
