The thrills of observing your favourite sport can be as addictive as any manufactured adrenaline boost. And probably even more so when your allegiance to a particular team is given some added impetus by a successful run or yes, equally, a special one off dazzling exhibition can thrill you considerably.
Actually during that latest Blue Riband period for our club, of the 1990's, Workington Town were instrumental in keeping my body weight under control: they thrilled me skinny..
Slight digression there, please excuse me. However similar excitement levels must have been surely the case at Derwent Park last Sunday, i.e. for most Townies, and for the majority of the match. It was one of those days when you really perceived an upset was on the cards.
Leigh had won the Division One title prior to this game, but no doubting they were still up for it, having made pre match preparations which included a local overnight stay.
The second half fight back by the visitors, having earlier been shell shocked by Workington's 14 point windfall, made the tension almost unbearable.
That early onslaught by Town must have brought about almost orgasmic pleasure** (see just below) for the jubilant Townies. Only to eventually have such passionate emotions dramatically droop following the killer blow by the Centurions five minutes from time.
I was shouting yes-yes-yes-yes to all that Town were doing - only to bellow "oh no!!" when the powerful centre Anderson strode through a very tired looking defence for that game breaker.
** unless you are in the 50 plus age range - or is it only me? (it's only you - Ed)
And yet I have not seen any evidence to convince me that Lynton's last ditch effort wasn't a legal try. Obviously Noddy and his flag holder denied us that one. But I'm still of the opinion that it was a try. It wasn't in the papers though...
So taking stock of the situation it becomes necessary to win all three of our remaining matches to perhaps notch a play off berth.
I say perhaps because looking at the state of the table it does all depend on how other results fare. Yes we must certainly win ours, but also we need favours from, for example, Oldham. If the Roughyeds can beat Hull KR on the final day of the season, and we have maximised our input, we will surely be there on play-off opening day.
I see the trip to Sheffield as the big one. The south Yorkshire outfit are out of contention, but no team lays down. Pride and winning pay spur on every team.
Therefore the requirement is for a massive input from the travelling Town Army on Sunday 24th June.
Having said that we must not, first of all, disrespect this Sunday's visitors to Derwent Park.
The Lions of Swinton are also too far off the pace for a play off challenge. But does that not mean they can play relaxed football from here on in? I think it does.
So again it is vital that the lads get their own adrenaline boost from the backing of the Workington punters out there on the terraces.
The target all season has been a play off berth, and we do not want our season to end on the rocks this Sunday.
If you are reading this, and are already committed to being at DP on Sunday, good on you but why not spread the word, if time permits, that the club needs those ex-Townies back on board urgently. You know some of them don't you? Give them a dig from me!
