So then the month of May was perhaps not what the doctor had required for the benefit of Towns play off aspirations. On paper it had seemed an exacting schedule - and in the monthly analysis much damage has been done to the clubs upward surge on the swingometer of local popularity.

The die-hards, they of the clubs ever loyal support, will of course stand fast, it is the more volatile brethren who will likely be tottering on the brink of (again) deserting the terraces of Derwent Park.

Some hold the unrealistic opinions that a "massive clear out" will cure all that is unfavourable within the Town. Swinging verbal punches at random these folk can actually do more harm to the club than what they purvey as good, remember the old adage - 'never cast a clout 'til May is out'.?

Well I do - old sage that I am I guess - and I agree with the level headed view that June can burst out all over with points for Town. And no, before anyone accuses it of me, I am not towing any 'party line' here.

First up this new month is a visit to lowly Chorley, a win will probably put Workington back in the 'eight'.

Talking of the Lynx, it was not too long ago, unless you are waiting for a bus, that they were the lower Divisions top dogs - okay then, cats.

I recall a visit to their then lair of Deepdale, the Preston North End arena, they beat us by a fairly convincing 36-0, very convincing in fact.

Before that match I met for the first, and as it happened last, time the Scottish entrepreneur Mr Bob Jameson. Anyone remember him? At close quarters he conjured up images of a cross between Del Trotter and Bob Hoskins, allegedly possessing qualities(?) of the former. That sunny bank holiday evening he was proudly displaying a trophy, in his eyes,(his hands actually) which was a Scotland RL world cup shirt."The only one of its kind in existence", I can still hear him saying that. I countered that with "so what were the rest of the Scottish squad wearing then?" I never received an answer to my not too clever interrogation.

Now I'll refer back to my opening salvo, and the vibrant critics of current Town affairs. You folk just be thankful that the uncanny Scot was shown the road back up to the highlands, and finally exposed as a no hoper.

I said he reminded of Trotter/Hoskins, but also I saw shades of the Knighton aura about him. I had, prior to the Preston pan, saw BOB once at DP. Not to converse with, more of an observational stance. The Town chairman of that era, now notable by his absence, introduced - "the new owner of Workington Town", during one session of after match festivities back in 1997.

Having then been handed the mike the saviour(?) of Workington Town could only manage a couple of words before bursting into tears. Later on so did I, sort of weep, with sheer worry. Was my long time support of this club going to be put in the destiny of someone who looked, er rather shady?, and who couldn't string three sensible words together?

I know some factions of the supporters organisations were convinced by the 'Scotty schemes', yes some ideas did have a certain feasibility about them - for instance upping the status of Workington Town around the holiday makers haunts of the Lake District.

But when it came down to brass tacks, brass in fact, jock was strapped for capital to carry out those manoeuvres within his portfolio - again arise the Knighton syndrome.

The moral of me flying off on this tangent of a tempestuous past is that I am certain the club is in very good hands at present. All the staff are local, many good business persons, and all excellent workers on behalf of Town. No plans are laid on thin ice as was the case four years ago, just a rock solid formation which will keep the Workington club afloat - but they do also still need your support........
