The win at Dewsbury can now be filed, along with numerous other momentous conquests, under the heading of 'top Town triumphs' and it currently makes the cherished top eight an even more feasible target for the club and it's followers.
It is surely performances like this latest victory that will make the ex-Townies sit up and take notice. Although once again the loyal band of travelling Townies had to endure a nail biting finale with Dewsbury giving all in a tense final quarter comeback. It was testimony to the spirit within the club that Town dug in and defied the odds to gain their best away win of the season.
A special mention must be made for my la'al mate 'Kipper' who I have always respected for his undying enthusiasm for the game, something I've been aware of since his academy days. The wee fella has ebbed and flowed during his pro career, but never seems to lose heart, and when I heard he was to become an emergency winger at the Rams Stadium I had faith in his ability to perform well for Town. So it proved, with the home team singling him out for attacking kicks which Kipper fielded as though a natural born winger.
The down side from last Sundays great news was the alleged remarks, of a very provocative nature, made to a Town player during those gripping closing stages, by a rival player. Okay so Dewsbury were on the rack, and struggling to recover from Town's first half onslaught, but that is no excuse for the sad behaviour of a Rams player. The make-up of which has been described to me, and I was shocked. Scandalous that our great game should sink to such depths, and if the allegations are proven to be true the authorities should take stern action.
Incidentally I could not, owing to health problems, make it to Dewsbury. However my heart was there at the stadium and in my mouth at times. But I must say that while I don't very often hear Radio Cumbria coverage, the commentary on Sunday was brilliant. I used to hold the opinion that my ex-teacher, the late Ron Morgan, was the top 'man on the mike' for the station. I think now that revered title belongs to John Walsh, a long time erudite local scribe who now can talk the talk with equal distinction.
His descriptive comments including his off the cuff humour are top class. Great stuff Walshie for us listeners, sent from the comfort of your swivel chair (hope the pigeon didn't leave you a deposit on it). By the way I can reveal, if you didn't know, that Walshies favourite song is 'Blue Moon' (kippax version) but we all have our faults I guess.
I had a visit from my fellow Egremothian recently, he of peg leg/knee bother but no parrot. Wilma, of course, and the big man is not a happy chappie. His injury situation has been diagnosed as cartilage trouble with the almost certain added complications of a torn cruciate knee ligament. Ouch! He is due to have a first bout of surgery early next week (Tuesday) with a possible follow-up session under the knife at some later date. Not good news at all and I believe it confirms that we will not see him in a Town shirt again this season, unless a miracle occurs that is. I know he is downhearted by this injury and I'm sure I will not be alone in wishing Will good luck for the future.
Finally, it's off to Spotland this weekend. The Hornets are buzzing along well after a sticky start to their campaign. They had spies posted at Dewsbury and will surely have come away quite impressed (maybe even worried?) by Town's current form. If the reported Town injuries collected last week are not as serious as suspected then we will give them 80 minutes of defiant stuff.
If, however, players are to be missing we shall just have to field several more 'kippers' and we may even still give them a cod………
