» Town 52 : 8 Chorley Lynx

Mike at The Match

Workington returned to winning ways and results elsewhere helped to continue their push for a play-off place. Town needed a good points for score to help with their current league placing. After today's match 5 points separate the teams in 5th to 11th position.1

The first points of the day were scored after 3 minutes. Chorley kicked on the last, Steven Wood collected and ran the ball back at the Chorley defence. Wood made good ground and was inside the Chorley half when he lost the ball in a one-on-one tackle. The ball spun loose and Town retrieved the ball to regain the possession. The visitors drove the ball down the middle before the ball was swung wide to the right and Matthew Woodcock went in at the corner. Kevin Hetherington missed with the conversion kick.

Chorley responded well and drew level when Ian Talbot slotted over two penalties in the 6th and 9th minute. The first was awarded for a flop in the tackle and the second for a high tackle.2

Graeme Lewthwaite made a great break in the 13th minute after some neat interplay with Carl Sice. The winger was tackled deep inside the Chorley half. On the last tackle Town put up the high kick, the Chorley defence were unable to deal with the ball and knocked-on. Town collected the loose ball and the referee wiped out the tackle count. The ball was passed along the line to Lynton Stott who threw the dummy and went in to score under the posts. Kevin Hetherington easily added the conversion to put Town back into the lead.

4Two minutes later Town went further ahead. Good drives by Stuart Hoyles, Lokeni Savelio, Matt Sturm and Anthony Samuel brought them to halfway. Hetherington collected the ball and ran along the line, rounded the winger and sped down the touchline to score in the corner. He then added the touchline conversion make the score 4-16.

Jamie Beaumont was injured in the 18th minute and had to be carried off on a stretcher. The second rower appeared to twist his knee when he was tackled. The loss of Beaumont seemed to affect Town and Chorley enjoyed their best spell of the game keeping the Cumbrians under pressure in defence.

Chorley reduced the Town lead in the 26th minute. Phil Harrison took Chris Ramsdale's pass and burst through the tackle to score in the corner. Ian Talbot was unlucky when the touchline conversion attempt hit the post.5

Good Town handling saw them close to the host's line in the 32nd minute. A neat little pass from Samuel released Hoyles and he crashed in close to the posts to score. Hetherington slotted over the conversion to make the score 8-22.

6Ten minutes into the second half Town increased their lead. Steven Wood again making a telling break before he passed to the supporting Matt Sturm who went in from 30-metres out to score close to the posts. Hetherington successfully added the conversion attempt.

Lynton Stott scored his second try of the day after 64 minutes. The scrum half stepped out of the tackle and burst through the gap to score under the posts. Kevin Hetherington again slotted over the conversion.

7The last 10 minutes of the match brought the spectacle of Chorley pressing the self-destruct button. First Graham Taberner was sin-binned for back chatting the referee. Then Mike Prescott was sent off for punching Lokeni Savelio in the tackle though his victim was also sin-binned for retaliation. Stuart Fisher was next to leave the field when sin-binned for making comments to the linesman.

Against 10 men Town, ran in three further tries. The first went to Graeme Lewthwaite. He came in field looking for the ball and went through three would be tacklers to score under the posts. Carl Sice chipped in with two tries in the last 2 minutes, both from close range. The hooker stretched for the line from the play of the ball for the first and burrowed his way through the defensive tacklers to get his second in the last minute. Steven Wood added all three conversion kicks to make the final score 8-52.
